The Characteristics and Location Changes of the Film Industry in the Seoul Metropolitan Area

Abstract

This paper identifies the characteristics and trends of the film industry in the metropolitan area since 2000 until recently, and analyzes the changes in the location of the film production industry and the film screening industry as a whole. The number of movie industry companies in Korea has increased dramatically since 2015, with production companies accounting for the largest share. The film industry has become increasingly concentrated in the Seoul metropolitan area, with half of Korea's film industry located in Seoul. However, the film production industry, which had been concentrated in Gangnam, Seoul, tended to disperse to Gyeonggi Province over time, and by 2022, production companies were located in various areas, including Mapo-gu, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, and Goyang-si, Gyeonggi Province. The movie screening industry was less concentrated in the metropolitan area than the production industry, with Seoul having the most movie theaters. However, in recent years, Gyeonggi has seen a significant increase in movie theaters, and recently surpassed Seoul in the number of screens. Incheon has less developed movie production and movie screening industries than Seoul and Gyeonggi.

이 논문에서는 2000년 이후 최근까지 수도권 영화산업의 특성과 추이를 파악하고 영화 제작업과 영화 상영업의 입지 변화를 총체적으로 분석하였다. 우리나라 영화산업 업체는 2015년부터 급격히 늘어났으며 제작업체의 비중이 가장 높았다. 영화산업의 수도권 집중 현상은 갈수록 심화하였으며 우리나라 영화산업의 절반은 서울에 분포하는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 서울 강남에 집적되었던 영화 제작업은 시간이 갈수록 경기로 분산되는 경향을 보여 2022년에는 서울 마포구, 용산구, 경기 고양시 등 다양한 지역에 제작업체가 들어섰다. 영화 상영업은 제작업보다 수도권으로의 집중도가 낮았는데, 수도권에서는 서울에 영화관이 가장 많았다. 하지만 최근에는 경기에 영화관이 현저히 증가해 경기의 스크린 수가 서울을 넘어섰다. 인천은 서울, 경기보다 영화 제작업과 영화 상영업의 발달이 미약하였다.
