Current Situations and Implications of ESG for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises in Gyeonggi-do

Abstract

ESG is an abbreviation for Environment, Social, and Governance. It is believed that environmental and social responsibilities should be considered in corporate management and governance should be improved to increase corporate value and achieve sustainable development in the long term. This study aims to identify the awareness and actual response to ESG management of small and medium-sized enterprises in Gyeonggi-do, and to derive implications in order to prepare measures that require policy support. As a result of the survery, more than half of the responding companies were aware of ESG management, but had only heard of the term, and approximately 29% believed that ESG management was necessary for companies and would have an impact on their company. However, only about 8% of responding companies appear to be currently pursuing ESG management at the request of main contractors and partners, and are mainly focusing on the social sector. In the future, the environmental sector is judged to be the most important item to prepare for first. In addition, companies most preferred ‘funding support or tax benefits’ for ESG management, and ‘provision of ESG information and education’. Therefore, it was found that policy support such as spreading ESG awareness, capacity building education, and establishing a channel to resolve difficulties for step-by-step implementation was needed to help companies prepare and promote ESG management.

ESG는 환경(Environment), 사회(Social), 지배구조(Governance)의 약자로 기업경영에 있어서 환경과 사회적 책임을 고려하고 지배구조를 개선해야 장기적으로 기업의 가치를 높이며 지속가능한 발전이 일어난다고 본다. 본 연구는 경기도 지역 중소기업의 ESG 경영에 대한 인식과 실제 대응 실태를 파악하고 정책적 지원이 필요한 방안을 마련하기 위하여 시사점을 도출하고자 한다. 실태조사 결과 응답기업의 절반 이상이 ESG 경영을 인지하고 있지만 용어를 들어본 정도이고 약 29%가 ESG 경영이 기업에 필요하고 자사에 영향을 미칠 것으로 보았다. 하지만 응답기업의 약 8%만이 원청사와 협력사 요구로 현재 ESG 경영을 추진하고 있으며 주로 사회부문(Social)을 중점적으로 실행하고 있고 향후에는 환경부문(Environment)을 가장 먼저 준비해야 할 당면항목으로 판단하고 있다. 뿐만 아니라 중소기업은 ESG 경영을 위하여 ‘자금지원 또는 세제혜택’ 지원을 가장 선호했으며, 무엇보다 ‘ESG 정보 및 교육제공’을 원하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 그리하여 중소기업들이 ESG 경영을 준비하고 추진할 수 있도록 ESG 인식확산과, 역량강화 교육, 단계적 이행을 위한 애로해결 창구를 마련 등 정책적 지원이 필요한 것으로 나타났다.
