Analysis on the Trends and Factors in the Spatial Distribution of Human Capital in Korea

Abstract

This study analyze the trends and factors of the regional distribution of human capital. The analysis results show that there is an inverse relationship between population aging and human capital, and the proportion of college graduates has been equalized by region since 2005. However, regional gap in human capital is still widening when human capital is measured by the proportion of higher-educated people such as masters and doctorate degrees. It is found that the regions with relatively higher level of human capital show the greater innovation capabilities, especially when the human capital is measured by the proportion of higher-educated people than college graduates.

본 연구는 우리나라 지역별 격차의 주요 요인인 인적자본의 지역별 분포 변동 추이 및 요인에 대해 분석하였다. 분석 결과 인구고령화와 인적자본 간에는 역의 관계가 있으며 2005년 이후부터는 지역별 대학졸업자 비중의 평준화가 진행되고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 다만 석･박사학위자 등 보다 고학력자의 비중을 기준으로 하였을 때는 지역별 인적자본의 격차가 더욱 확대되고 있음이 확인되었다. 특히 인적자본의 수준이 높은 지역일수록 혁신역량도 더 큰 것으로 나타났는데 이는 대학졸업자 보다는 석･박사학위자 등 보다 고학력자의 비중을 기준으로 인적자본을 평가했을 때 더 크고 분명하게 나타난다.
