Urban Amenity in South Korea: Context and Characteristics

Abstract

This paper starts with Terry Clark’s urban amenity model. Using focus group survey on the researchers in the field, characteristics of South Korean urban amenity is being explored. Contextual understanding is being sought after here, trying to find comparable South Korean spaces to the places beach-enjoying Americans spend their daily lives. The dominant phenomena that characterizes American urban amenity is urban sprawl. Authors here present analogue of ‘lawn’ and ‘mall’. In contrast, the Korean counterparting analogue is ‘private educational institute’ and ‘supermarket’ Korean apartment new towns expand from cities in a continuous manner. Survey responses align to our analogies. Perceived physical boundaries of urban amenity in Korea is smaller than they are in the United States. Koreans can walk or use public transportation. Apartment new towns such as Seoul Kangnam and Busan Haeundae show high social urban amenity scores.

이 연구의 출발점은 클라크(T. Clark)의 도시 쾌적성 모형이며, 이 연구는 한국의 도시 쾌적성 특성을 전문가 표적집단 조사라는 연구방법을 통해 탐색하였다. 클라크의 논문에 나오는 미국 샌디에이고의 해변을 즐기는 미국인의 일상공간에 해당하는 장소가 한국에서는 어떤 곳인지를 살펴보는 맥락적 이해를 추구하였다. 이 연구는 미국의 도시 쾌적성을 결정짓는 압도적 현상으로서 도시교외 확산을 제시하며, 미국 교외도시 쾌적성에 대해 ‘잔디’와 ‘쇼핑몰’이라는 비유를 지적하였다. 이에 따라 이 연구는 기존 도심에서 교외로 확장되는 아파트 신도시를 한국의 압도적 현상으로 고찰할 수 있다. 한국에서의 비유는 ‘학원’과 ‘마트’이며, 이는 전문가 설문조사의 응답도 이러한 맥락적 이해와 일치하였다. 다만, 사례로서 자동차 운전을 전제로 하는 클라크 모형이 나온 미국과는 체감되는 도시 쾌적성의 단위는 다르게 나타났다. 한국에서는 자동차로 이동해야 하는 미국의 거리보다 짧은 거리가 제시되었다. 한국의 서울 강남 3구와 부산의 해운대와 같은 아파트 신도시가 높은 사회적 도시 쾌적성 점수를 나타내어 주었다.
