Over the past 50 years, South Korea has conducted various studies and applied policies for the sustainable conservation and use of national parks. Currently, national parks in Korea are divided into regions according to the criteria of the 2^nd National Park Feasibility Study. They are managed in an environment-friendly way according to the characteristics of each district. Despite these efforts, the districts in the current national park do not fully consider the elements necessary for the conservation of the natural ecosystem due to the lack of basic data and a scientific evaluation system. Therefore, this study aims to develop an ecosystem-based evaluation system needed to prepare the criteria for the 3^rd National Park Feasibility Study. First, essential factors necessary for ecosystem-based evaluation were developed and evaluation was quantitatively performed for each factor. Next, considering the characteristics of each park type, different weights were applied to each park for the ecosystem-based evaluation classification criteria. Finally, new districts within each national park were visually represented on a map and a comparative analysis was conducted for each national park. The results of this study were computed through the ecosystem-based evaluation method based on GIS-based multi criteria decision analysis(GIS-MCDA). The ecosystem-based approach proposed in this study is meaningful in that it is a scientific and systematic method that considers essential factors for evaluating ecosystem conservation values.
