Spatiotemporal Analysis of Nighttime Ship Distribution in Korean Jurisdictional Waters Using VIIRS Boat Detection Data

Abstract

This study investigates the spatiotemporal characteristics of nighttime boat distribution within the Korean jurisdictional waters, utilizing VIIRS Day/Night Band (DNB)-based boat detection data accumulated over a decade (2015–2024). By employing Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) K-means clustering, we typified the spatiotemporal patterns of boat activity into four distinct clusters and quantitatively elucidated their seasonal and regional characteristics. The analysis revealed that boat activity generally peaked in autumn across the entire study area, while exhibiting a tendency toward increased variability during summer and winter. Regarding spatial distribution, Cluster 1 was irregularly distributed across the Yellow Sea, East Sea, and South Sea, whereas Cluster 2 showed a dense concentration near major ports and primary fishing grounds. Cluster 3 was concentrated in coastal waters, while Cluster 4 was characterized by its distribution over the most extensive area. The analysis using seasonal indices indicated a common pattern across all clusters, where boat activity was concentrated in autumn. Cluster 1 exhibited high activity in autumn, characterized by relatively high variability in boat activity during the summer. Clusters 2 and 3 displayed relatively low seasonal coefficients of variation, indicating stable seasonal patterns. In contrast, Cluster 4 presented significantly higher seasonal CVs in summer and winter compared to other clusters, suggesting that this cluster is subject to relatively high intra-seasonal variability in boat activity. The data on boat activity characteristics by cluster derived from this study are expected to serve as valuable foundational information for establishing marine policies and managing fisheries resources.

이 연구는 2015년부터 2024년까지 10년간 축적된 VIIRS DNB 선박 탐지 데이터를 활용하여, 우리나라 관할 해역 내 야간 선박 분포의 시공간적 특성을 분석하였다. 이를 위해 동적시간워핑(DTW) K-means 군집 분석을 적용하여 선박 활동의 시공간적 패턴을 4개의 군집으로 유형화하고, 각 군집의 계절별 및 지역별 특성을 정량적으로 규명하였다. 분석 결과, 연구 대상 해역 전반에서 가을철 선박 활동이 가장 활발하였으며, 여름과 겨울에는 변동성이 확대되는 경향을 보였다. 군집별 공간 분포 특성을 살펴보면, 군집 1은 황해, 동해, 남해 전역에 불규칙하게 산재하였고, 군집 2는 주요 항구 및 핵심 어장에 밀집하는 양상을 보였다. 군집 3은 연안 해역에 집중되었으며, 군집 4는 가장 광범위한 영역에 걸쳐 분포하는 특성이 확인되었다. 계절성 지표를 통해 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 모든 군집에서 선박 활동이 가을에 집중되는 공통된 패턴이 관측되었다. 군집 1은 가을에 선박 활동이 활발하고 여름에 선박 활동의 변동성이 상대적으로 큰 특성을 보여주었다. 군집 2와 3은 상대적으로 낮은 계절 변동 계수를 보여 안정적인 계절 패턴을 나타냈다. 군집 4는 타 군집 대비 여름과 겨울의 계절 변동 계수가 높게 산출되었는데, 이는 계절 내 선박 활동의 변동성이 상대적으로 큰 군집임을 시사한다. 이 연구에서 도출된 군집별 선박 활동 특성 자료는 향후 해양 정책 수립 및 수산 자원 관리를 위한 기초 자료로서 중요한 가치를 지닐 것으로 기대된다.
